![]() ![]() ![]() As darker materials absorb light, this means a significant amount of light may be absorbed between the top and the bottom of the shelf. For high-density book shelving, vacancy sensors can be used to reduce light levels (and save energy) during periods of vacancy during operating hours.īook spines are typically darker color, resulting in IES estimating an overall reflectance in the aisle of 30 percent or less. High-density book shelving and periodical shelving have similar light level recommendations consult IES-RP-4-13 to learn more. Regardless, the average-to-minimum vertical and horizontal light level uniformity should be at a 2:1 ratio. The most desirable light level within these ranges depends on the predominant ages of users, as older people need more light. IES further recommends about an average 10 to 40 footcandles of vertical illumination on the front face of the shelving 2.5 feet above the finished floor, with a minimum of about half that near the bottom of the shelving. IES recommends a minimum of about 10 to 40 footcandles of horizontal illumination on the floor and an average of about 15 to 60 footcandles 2.5 feet above the finished floor. In the stack area, the two primary tasks are reading covers and spines on the shelves, requiring vertical illumination from as tall as 90 inches to as low as six inches off the floor and reading selected materials, requiring horizontal illumination. If rare books and artifacts are stored, these materials may be sensitive to ultraviolet energy and heat produced by electric light and daylight sources, and therefore may need to be isolated. For older or lesser-used materials storage, high-density storage systems such as rolling stack shelving may be used, in which shelving units rest adjoined and are separated via a floor or ceiling rail using a manual or mechanical method. Typically, shelving is vertical, though angled shelves, carrousels, bins, and drawers may be in use for special materials and presentation of books. These shelving units connect to form ranges, separated by aisles that are at least 3 feet wide for browsing and 44 inches wide for major circulation and egress paths. In these areas, books are typically stored in shelving units that are often 3 feet wide, 1 foot deep, and 3 to 7.5 feet tall, according to IES. This article describes considerations and techniques for designing book stack lighting, based on the Illuminating Engineering Society’s (IES) RP-4-13, Recommended Practice for Library Lighting.Ī library stack is a collection storage as opposed to a reading area. In typical school and public libraries, this storage takes up 30 to 50 percent of usable floorspace, even more in other library types. Nonetheless, the most popular type of space remains storage of book collections, called the library or book stack. A variety of spaces impose common and particular lighting requirements, including entrances, lobbies, retail, office, display, services, multipurpose rooms, and exterior areas.Īs library usage shifts to e-books, Internet, and digital content, there is less demand for publicly accessible storage areas. Today’s libraries offer books and artifacts, digital content, computer and Internet access, wireless communications, and a place to meet. These buildings feature a variety of spaces and tasks as use of their use has changed. Reprinted with permission.Īccording to the American Library Association, there are nearly 120,000 libraries in the United States, including school (82 percent), public (8 percent), and other (10 percent) libraries. Below is an application story I contributed to the February issue of tED Magazine. ![]()

![]() Selecting the right dairy ingredient for your application can be confusing because many milk and whey ingredients have a similar composition, for example nonfat dry milk (NDM) and whey protein concentrate 34 (WPC34). Milk and whey ingredients are used in a wide variety of food products including dairy products, baked products, confections, soups, sauces, infant formula, processed meats, prepared foods, and beverages. These components also provide many of the same unique nutritional properties found in milk. Their composition can consist of multiple components such as, proteins (caseins and/or whey proteins), milkfat, lactose, and ash (minerals), and thus provides many different functional properties described in the table below. They provide a mild, dairy flavor that blends well with many food products. These benefits are often described as flavor, function, and nutrition. Milk and whey ingredients provide multiple benefits to food products. As new dry milk products and improved analytical methods for the testing of all milk products continue to be developed, this publication will be updated to assist in maintaining uniformity within the industry. The American Dairy Products Institute (ADPI), formed when the Whey Products Institute and the American Dry Milk Institute merged in April, 1986, is the national trade association of the processed dairy products industry, specifically representing the evaporated milk, condensed and dry milk, and whey/whey products segments of the industry. Similarly, the manufacturer is protected against unreasonable complaints because the grade standards are succinct and based upon specific methods of analysis. Any element of risk is eliminated from the purchase since the buyer may have each purchase checked by grade analysis. Reduce Risk: The manufacturer of the dry milk product assumes the responsibility for delivering the grade of product offered. In this way, many detailed tests varying between manufacturing and purchasing organizations are eliminated. Tests and grades are based on accepted specific analytical procedures, well understood by both parties. Facilitate Purchase: Buyers and sellers are afforded a common basis whereby a dry milk product, meeting definite product requirements, is recognized by its grade name.Dry milk product standards enable both manufacturers and purchasers to specify the grade of product offered for sale or required for use. Assure Uniformity: Uniform quality of product is assured by grade specification, accepted and understood throughout the dry milk industry. Both manufacturers and purchasers utilize these grading standards for the following reasons: Grading Requirements for Nonfat Dry Milk (NDM), Instant Nonfat Dry Milk INDM), Dry Whole Milk (DWM), Dry Buttermilk (DBM) and Dry Buttermilk Product (DBMP) were developed to promote the utilization of these products by making available a uniform grading system for EXTRA GRADE and STANDARD GRADE products. However, buyers who use these standards in their purchases provide themselves with an added safeguard regardless of the particular purpose for which the product may be intended. Consequently, to determine the acceptability of the product for a specific use, special supplementary tests not included in these standards may be necessary. These composition requirements are not designed to meet all end-uses. ![]() Composition specifications included with these standards will help determine general overall product excellence. ![]() If the fluid milk supply, it’s processing, and the subsequent storage of the finished product are in accordance with acceptable procedures and practices, the dry milk product offered should meet these industry standards. ![]() In addition, they serve to protect the manufacturer of superior quality products from competition by inferior products and provide a basis for an effective quality control program. Many of us hope to limit food waste-whether for economical or environmental reasons-and you may be able to get more life out of your produce than the timelines in this guide suggest. ![]() The factors that affect produce freshness (temperature, humidity, how long ago an item was harvested before you brought it home) can vary widely. You can use produce bags from the grocery store, too. These containers hold in moisture, preventing produce from dehydrating, and they help protect sensitive produce from the effects of ethylene gas. Most refrigerated produce stays fresh longer when sealed, whether in zip-top plastic bags, reusable silicone pouches, or containers with tight-fitting lids. Even if the bananas, potatoes, or onions you bought came in a perforated plastic bag, they’ll last longer if you take them out and let them breathe. Produce that keeps best at room temperature needs air circulation. Whether you refrigerate or not, you should keep ethylene-sensitive fruits and veggies separate from the gas-emitting ones. It hastens the ripening (and eventual decay) of certain types of produce that are ethylene-sensitive, like cabbage, leafy greens, lettuce, and broccoli, just to name a few. A lot of produce keeps well in the refrigerator, while some items like potatoes, onions, and garlic are best left at cool room temperatures.Īnd then there’s ethylene gas (PDF), which some fruits-such as apples and bananas-naturally release. Backed on drums by Jason Bonham (John's son) and accompanied by a gospel choir, the Wilson sisters transfixed the crowd. ![]() Of the many cover versions of "Stairway," two in particular have earned praise from the members of Led Zeppelin: Dolly Parton's version on her 2002 album Halos and Horns, and a 2012 performance at the Kennedy Center by Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart as part of a concert honoring Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones. There are a lot of people who are making money there, and if that's the way they need to do it, then do it without my lyrics. I walked around, and I couldn't actually believe, I couldn't take people seriously who could come up with sketches like that. The first time I heard it was early in the morning when I was living at home, and I heard it on a news program. Robert Plant addressed the issue in an interview with Musician magazine: "'Stairway To Heaven' was written with every best intention, and as far as reversing tapes and putting messages on the end, that's not my idea of making music. In his books, Crowley advocated that his followers learn to read and speak backwards. ![]() This is rumored to contain backward satanic messages, as if Led Zeppelin sold their souls to the devil in exchange for "Stairway To Heaven." Supporting this theory is the fact that Jimmy Page bought Aleister Crowley's house in Scotland, known as Boleskine House. Bands would go there to get some privacy and focus on songwriting, as the biggest distractions were the sheep and other wildlife. Headley Grange may not be as enchanting as Bron-yr-Aur, but the place had some character: It was a huge, old, dusty mansion with no electricity but great acoustics. Plant corroborated the story in his testimony. Page told a different story under oath: When he was called to the stand in 2016 as part of a plagiarism trial over this song, he said that he wrote the music on his own and first played it for his bandmates at Headley Grange in Liphook Road, Headley, Hampshire, where they recorded it using a mobile studio owned by The Rolling Stones. Page sometimes told a story of the pair sitting by a fire at the cabin as they composed it, a tale that gives the song a mystical origin story, as there could have been spirits at play within those walls. Page and Plant explained that they started working on it at a 250-year-old Welsh cottage called Bron-yr-Aur, where they wrote the songs for Led Zeppelin III. In October 1970, after about 18 months of near constant touring, the song took shape. By April, he was telling journalists that their new song might be 15-minutes long, and described it as something that would "build towards a climax" with John Bonham's drums not coming in for some time. Jimmy Page would work on the song in an 8-track studio he had installed in his boathouse, trying out different sections on guitar. Led Zeppelin started planning "Stairway" in early 1970 when they decided to create a new, epic song to replace " Dazed And Confused" as the centerpiece of their concerts. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Manufacturer Contact InformationĬustomers can call the toll free number for any issues, which is 1-80 Customers can call the toll free number for any issues, which is 1-80. In earlier posts I have shared the 5 Best Apps for Teaching Sight Words and The 7 Best Phonics Apps. To keep things fresh and engaging it’s important we provide them with a range of sight word activities that offer different ways to work with the words. Students will spend a lot of time working on word recognition. Once students have received your direction instruction (“ I do“) and had plenty of opportunities to practice their heart words with you (“ We do“), they need time to practice and apply these skills on their own (“ You do“). The irregular part of the word is the part they must “learn by heart”, thus the name Heart Words. You explicitly teach them the sounds that are irregular in the word. The Heart Word Method requires students to use their phoneme knowledge to map the regular part of the words. Instead, integrate irregularly spelled, high-frequency words into your phonics lessons using the Heart Word Method. This means you must stop expecting students to learn sight words through flashcards and rote memorization. The Science of Reading tells us that effective instruction follows the “ I do, We do, You do” model. What is the best way to teach sight words? * It should be noted that while technically there is a difference between sight words and high frequency words (high frequency words are the most commonly occurring words in print and sight words are any word a student can read “at first sight”), when I refer to “sight words” I am referring to the words in the High Frequency Dolch Sight Words list. Secondly, knowing sight words is a huge confidence booster for students! Strong sight word knowledge allows them to understand the majority of the text, even when their decoding skills are still developing. Sight word practice is so important for young readers! For one, it allows them to free up cognitive resources so they can focus on the tougher words that require strong decoding skills. Words that can be recognized this way are known as sight words. While there are many skills and strategies we use to do so, one that gets a lot of time and attention is word recognition.Īlthough not a substitute for the ability to decode (also important!), the ability to recognize some words automatically, or on sight, contributes to reading effortlessly and with understanding. Teaching students to read is one of the most important (and best!) responsibilities we have as teachers. Each sight word game offers plenty of word recognition activities perfect for beginning readers. Students will love these free online sight word games. ![]() ![]() ![]() The company tries to optimize each roof by installing the tiles with solar cells where they would be more efficient.įrom the angle of the ground, the solar tiles and non-solar tiles look the same. People can also change their levels of optimism depending on the situations they are in. Of course, optimism, like other psychological states and characteristics, exists on a continuum. Specifically, optimistic people believe that negative events are temporary, limited in scope (instead of pervading every aspect of a person’s life), and manageable. Martin Seligman defines optimism as reacting to problems with a sense of confidence and high personal ability. Optimism is a trait that should become more common, judging by Winston Churchill’s famous quote that “a pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” Recent research indicates that optimists and pessimists approach problems differently, and their ability to cope successfully with adversity differs as a result.
